I got
up early and after a good night’s sleep I was ready to go. I hit the road at 8:30.
The
friendly gaz station
At 4.5
km, I stopped at another gaz station. The attendants were very friendly. I had
tea and before leaving I took a shower. It appears that gaz stations in the
area are set up in a truck driver friendly way, which I took advantage of.

The
road
A man
has to take sleeping breaks when he hits 35 km of distance. Having no choice, I
took break for sleep. Left at 34.35
Trying
to find my orientation
Also,
a man cannot ignore shady underpasses. So, at 48 km took an underpass break.
Left at 15:50.
There were many fruit sellers at the side of the road. I stopped and bought one kilo of
grapes that I consumed on the spot. The lady that was selling the grapes washed
the grapes for me, then she offered me food, and also invited me to her house
for tea, which I could not accept given my rush. Azeris are very hospitable people. Those things
usually happen when one hits 55.15 kms. I left at 16:45.
Vineyards
on the side of the road
Here
is what one would call fully signed road.
It was rather late when I arrived at Shankir.
First things first. I had to find an ATM and then a
hotel.
By
asking around I found a bank with an ATMM. Actually, a very sweet young girl
who was wallking with her grand mother gave me the directions. While doing that
she explained to me how she learned the English she knew and the tricks she
came up with to practice.
At
the ATM I went throught the usual motions, that is, I put my card in the slot and
typed the amount. As I as waiting for the money, three guys came out of a car, walked
right up to me, and stood very close to me, practically looking over my
shoulder. I asked “what do you want” and as they did not respond I braced for a
fight. The card was still in the machine and the machine was counting the money.
There was nothing I could do other than wait and brace for a few punches. They
were annoyingly close. Well, none of the above happened. I took my money, the
card, and the receipt without incident. They proceeded with their business.
After a few more incidents I concluded that the Azeris have a different concept
of distance between persons.
By
asking I located hotel Serhan at Samkir Rayon, and this is where I spent the
night.
